Telehealth Therapy: Convenient Care

When life feels overwhelming and too heavy to carry alone, finding support can be a vital step toward healing. Sometimes, the thought of traveling to a therapist’s office or fitting appointments into a busy schedule can feel like another challenge. That’s where telehealth comes in.

I want to share with you how telehealth therapy can be a comforting and practical option, especially for those navigating trauma and seeking healing. Together, we’ll explore what telehealth counseling looks like, how it can fit into your life, and some simple ways to make the most of this modern approach to therapy.

What Does Telehealth Look Like

Telehealth counseling means connecting with a licensed therapist through video calls. It’s therapy without the need to leave your home or office. This approach has grown in popularity, especially in Texas, where distances between providers and clients can sometimes be vast.

Imagine sitting in your favorite chair, wrapped in a cozy blanket, with a warm cup of tea nearby. You log into a secure platform and meet your counselor face-to-face on your screen. The environment feels safe and familiar, which can make opening up a little easier.

Benefits of telehealth counseling include:

  • Convenience: No travel time or parking hassles.

  • Flexibility: Easier to fit sessions into your busy day.

  • Comfort: Being in your own space can reduce anxiety.

  • Access: Connect with specialized therapists even if they are far away.

This method is especially helpful for those who have experienced trauma and may find traditional office settings intimidating or triggering. It can also be beneficial for someone dealing with chronic health issues that make it difficult to be out and about. Telehealth allows you to control your environment, which can be empowering.

How Telehealth Supports Healing

The therapy process requires safety, trust, and a strong therapeutic relationship. Telehealth offers a way to build that connection without the added stress of travel or unfamiliar spaces.

When you engage in therapy through telehealth, you can:

  • Set your own pace: You decide when and where to have your sessions.

  • Create a safe space: Choose a quiet, private spot that feels secure.

  • Use grounding tools: Have your favorite calming objects nearby, like a stress ball or essential oils.

  • Practice mindfulness: Begin or end sessions with breathing exercises or gentle stretches.

For example, if you’ve experienced betrayal trauma, you might find it helpful to start your session with a simple breathwork technique. This can help calm your nervous system and prepare you to explore difficult emotions.

Here’s a quick breathing exercise you can try before your next session:

  1. Sit comfortably with your feet flat on the floor.

  2. Close your eyes and take a slow, deep breath in through your nose for a count of four.

  3. Hold your breath gently for a count of four.

  4. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six.

  5. Repeat this cycle three to five times.

This simple practice can help you feel more grounded and ready to engage in healing conversations.

Practical Tips for Making the Most of Telehealth Therapy

Starting telehealth therapy can feel new or even a little uncertain. Here are some practical tips to help you feel more comfortable and get the most from your sessions:

1. Prepare Your Space

Choose a quiet, private area where you won’t be interrupted. Use headphones for better sound quality and privacy. Make sure your device is charged or plugged in. Be sure that there won't be people walking in and out of the room. No one should be present during your session even your children. Some people choose to meet in their car if they live with other people, this is just fine as long as the car is parked.

2. Test Your Technology

Before your first session, check your internet connection, camera, and microphone. At Infinite Hope we use Simple Practice. This platform has a testing feature. If you are using your phone be sure that if you are in a place with spotty wifi it is better to turn wifi off and use cellular data.

3. Set Boundaries

Let family or roommates know when you’ll be in a session to minimize interruptions. Use a “do not disturb” sign if needed. It can also be helpful to grab a sound machine to put outside of your door if you live with roommates or family.

4. Dress Comfortably

Wear clothes that make you feel relaxed but also ready to engage. This can help your mind shift into a therapeutic mindset.

5. Have Tools Ready

Keep a journal, tissues, water, or any comfort items nearby. Writing down thoughts or feelings after a session can deepen your healing.

6. Be Patient with Yourself

It’s okay if telehealth feels different at first. Give yourself time to adjust and communicate openly with your therapist about what works best for you.

7. Stay focused

It's crucial to approach this just like any other professional appointment. Ensuring that you are free from distractions during your session is essential. Therapy is a time when you might experience various emotions, so you don't want to be sidetracked by cooking, watching TV, or other activities.

By creating a supportive environment and using these tips, you can turn telehealth therapy into a powerful part of your healing journey.
